After the dental meltdown, I knew what was coming.. several nights of mixed nightmares and insomnia. Knowing this does not reduce the suckage. I really, really want to get a good night's sleep tonight.
Speaking of the dentist, we've rescheduled for next Wednesday at 1000. I am not going into work that day. I figure half the stress came from repeated attempts to get off early that were foiled by the nature of my job. So, a good night sleep, breakfast, lots of nitrous oxide and hopefully we can get the damn impressions done! (and pull another four or five teeth.)
My Thousand Suns setting is really starting to gel. Here are some basics: FTL is by jump lines, some systems have multiple connections, some only one or two. FTL travel requires a special sort of psionic talent; "pilots" tend to breed true and form guilds and near-religious fraternities. Jumps are near instantaneous to everyone but pilots, who swear that it takes an eternity, every time, and that there are intelligences in hyperspace that they have to fight. Ships do vanish from time to time... in fact, about 500 years ago there was a period where the jump net practically collapsed; causing the fall of the Terran Hegemony. Left on their own, many worlds fell into barbarism. Pilots call this period "The Dragon War." They refuse to elaborate.
My time line starts in April, 2015. The New Horizons probe reaches Pluto. Shortly thereafter images are sent back of Nix and Hydra.
They aren't moons. They are obviously spacecraft. Huge ones.
