It almost looks like adults live here.

Offhand Manor is transformed! For example, you can see the floors now. And the carpets are clean! The new futon frame was delivered early, and after some grunting and a lot of swearing,
kshandra and I assembled it. We have plans to add some further SE Asian accents to the place, but that is going to be an ongoing project. The next big thing is a new lamp or two for the living room, as the old floor lamp is slowly fading away. One of us will post some pictures soon. One side effect of this cleaning is we now have a mountain of CDs and DVDs. There is also a penguin on top of our television set. (No eggs yet, we keep checking down the back of the set.)
We've come into some money (can't say more than that at Kiri's request.) The big upshot for me is that I finally can get my new teeth! Monday I'll double-check to see that I have the current dental plan card, then start shopping for dentists who do full denture work.
The phone/net outage was annoying at best. The worst part was I'm in a large "ring" Ultracorps game (the players all start out spaced around the edge of a circular set of stars, with a large body of fairly strong neutrals in the middle ) and I'm doing fairly well. Not having the net meant I could catch up with the daily turns, and I was paranoid that I'd be attacked and not know it for days. Luckily, both my neighbors were fairly quiet.
I'm going to be writing a fairly nasty note to our landlords. This whole cleaning and redecorating frenzy was triggered by a threatening letter from the management company telling us to clean up or face eviction. Well, we did everything asked in the poorly written and spelled letter (our apartment was evidently a "breading ground" for vermin. mmmmm.. breaded vermin.. mmmm..) The letter stated that a re-inspection would take place on January 12th. Well, that's today, and the sun has gone done, and nothing. Even without the work we did today, we stayed home just because we knew that the landlords were coming by. No phone call, no visit, nothing. And the tree branch that came down in last week's storm is still sitting in the front yard.
Recent reading: The Coyote Trilogy by Allen Steele. I hesitate to call this a true trilogy, since the books are more collections of novellas linked by a general theme and progression. A bit heavy-handed on the political preaching, but very enjoyable with a few surprises. 4 penguins out of 5.

Date: 13 Jan 2008 18:52 (UTC)*sympathy* I'm trying to dig out from under; had it sort of under control near Christmas, but having a friend visit over New Year's plus severe migraine and fibro flares... oh ghods. *shudder* I'm still trying to figure out how to get the (dessicated) tree out of the stand and pull the stand out from under it so I can pull the big plastic bag over it and drag it outside to the dumpster area. It's a two person job, just like setting it up; but the help I had to set it up won't be available for another two weeks (*whimper*).
I think I need to call this place "Entropy Manor" - "Entropy" something, anyway. *wry*
The big upshot for me is that I finally can get my new teeth!
That was one of the big things from getting my Social Security back pay a couple years ago. I've worn dentures for, um... never mind... due to malpractice by the orthodontist (cavities under the braces on the sides of all the molars and the backs of all the front teeth). Too bad we didn't really do malpractice in the early '60s, I could've gotten myself a fund to cover a lifetime of dentures... I'd had the last set for waaaaay too many years.
No phone call, no visit, nothing. And the tree branch that came down in last week's storm is still sitting in the front yard.
*urge to kill* on your behalf. Sheesh.
Currently just finished Gods and Pawns by Kage Baker, and Dust by Elizabeth Bear. Both excellent, at the 5 ... um. I like your idea of "penguins" as rating system... oh! yeah! shinies! (oooh shiny! oooh CFS and/or medication-induced ADD!). So, 5 shinies each.

Date: 13 Jan 2008 19:24 (UTC)Out of curiosity, how often do dentures need replacing? I'm hoping that this is not going to be a constant drain on our resources.
Today there's a crew not only getting rid of storm debris, but doing basic yard maintenance as well. Still annoyed about the inspection that never happened.

It varies; my first replacement was in about four years, but I'd lived in Hawaii for two of them, and Navy pay didn't cover adequate quantities of milk/yoghurt etc., even at the base exchange, so I had abnormal bone shrinkage. (Surprising that I've not got full-fledged osteoporosis, really.) That new set got relined in about 10 years, and should've been replaced in, oh, 18, but by then I'd been hit with CFS and financial problems. I'd guesstimate replacing or relining every 10 years or so, but that's just a SWAG.
(People are surprised that I wear dentures; I manage things like corn-on-the-cob. Tough steak, though, defeats me. Tiny tiny tiny slices...) (And I will never ever again be able to eat a candy apple. *sigh*)
(Thread drift: is acquaintance with candy as opposed to caramel apples something to do with the time period one grew up in, or geographical area, or both?)
