Congrats to the Indianapolis Colts. Good win, you earned it. And congrats to the Bears, especially their defense, for making a game where the Colts dominating the statistics sheet much closer on the scoreboard.

But now, the head-desk moment. I'm reading Crooks&Liars, and there is an open thread on the game. The responses make me ashamed to be a liberal. Some examples:

"At the coin toss, when the 4 team captains were presented by name, Mohammad (Bears) was booed by the Indianapolis fans because of his Muslim name while the others were cheered.

Thanks Indianapolis fans, for showing the world what a bunch of racist homophobes live in this country."

The player he's referring to is Muhsin Mohammed. His first name is pronounced Moose-in, and whenever he makes a good play, or is introduced at the start of a game, Bears fans all yell "Moose!"

"It's a stupid, violent game/bloodsport--figures that it's so popular woth the masses. So stupid."

Crap like this makes me ashamed to be a liberal.

I've learned to ignore the idiots. But since I love an even bloodier sport (I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out), I've had to develop a tougher hide.
Good Game though. I do wish the Bears won. Ramona, my daughters best friend, is going to be bummed all week.
But at least now, I'll have an easier time finding hockey games for the rest of the season!

Pretty much any player with that "oo" sound in his name or nickname is going to get that. Deuce McAllister of the Saints gets it all the time. I think the first time I heard it was for Darryl "Moose" Johnson of the Dallas Cowboys.

I went to a BoSox/Yankees game in the early '80s, and the Pinstriped Pinheads had a player whose name rhymed with "boo". His name escapes me right now, but the Yankees fans went nuts when he came up to bat, and it sounded like booing if you didn't know who he was.

Sports are not my cup of tea, but I certainly don’t put people down because of it. I agree that the people in example 1 and 3 really need to get over them selves.

However the person in example 2 is right IF in fact the people were booing him because of his name. Thouse fans need to take a refresher course in “good sportsmanship” , and audit “being a adult 101”.

Now I’ve heard my sport fan friends talk about how sports teach teamwork and encourage comradely and etc. but when you see behavior like this then the arguments sound hollow and it looks like the gladiatorial games without the swords and loins.

I didn’t watch the game so I don’t know, they might have just been going Moooooooosssse, and it sounded like boooooo. In that case “Never Mind”

It gets even crazier when dealing with liberal pagans. I found myself breathing an inward sigh of relief when the folks I was visiting with Saturday had Hunt for Red October on the DVD player when I got there. Major mutual love for the story quality, to heck with the fact it's a military drama. So many pagans wouldn't touch it regardless of the Soviet captain's motivations because of the uniforms. As for pro sports, fuggedaboutit.
