Not being one of those service members, I want to comment that this description puts me in mind of the second version of Battlestar Galactica and the title ship's CIC compartment. Your Rube Goldberg leaves me thinking that it would not be out of place in that version of the Colonial Fleet. But then, Ronald Moore paid attention to such things during his time as show-runner there.
Also, you've given me enough visual cues that I want to make an attempt at a compartment schematic of some sort.
