Ah, Glam/Hair Metal. Spandex, studs, and tons of hair product. Into this gender-bending genre of metal came yet another Souther California band in 1984: Autograph. Founded by vocalist/guitarist Steve Plunkett as a side project after being frustrated by not being able to get his material played, the band managed to get a gig opening for Van Halen (unheard of for an unsigned band) and eventually a record contract.
That lead to 1984's Sign In Please. A mostly radio-friendly mix of pop metal and hard rock, it featured what would be Autograph's biggest hit: Turn Up The Radio. The song, and the accompnianing video were almost impossible to avoid in the first half of 1985. Success was fleeting, however, and after two follow-up albums (1985's That's the Stuff and 1987's Loud and Clear) failed to produced any notable singles or chart well, they were dropped by RCA Records. The band sputter along for another year or so before breaking up in December 1989.
Plunkett briefly resurrected Autograph in 2002 with a new line-up, releasing Buzz in 2003. The project soon lost steam and Autograph is currently inactive. Interestingly, they don't even bother to maintain an official web presence. The best site I could find was pop-up hell, and I'm not linking to it.
Autograph keyboardist Steve Isham lost his fight with liver cancer in December, 2008.
So enjoy your morning metal, and TURN UP THE RADIO!
