I think everyone got to work today expecting an easy time.. the drivers had been asking our regulars, and most of our contractors told us they were bailing before lunch, many places closed early, and we hoped to do the same.
My day got interesting right after I arrived. Instead of my route, I got to take 9,520lbs of material to Gayle Manufacturing in Woodland.
Trucking, like the Doo-Dah Man
Very nice drive, I could see the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains off in the distance, and most of the route was through rural and other open areas.
Once I got back ( I had to duck over to Livermore for one pick-up) I found our holiday party already in full swing. This annoyed me a bit. We had all been expecting a party like last year's but the expected announcement never materialized. So a buffet (pretty good Mexican food) in the warehouse was an acceptable substitute. But nobody told us this was happening, and they started while the drivers were still on the road! One driver made it back just before the food was served, I came in about 20 minutes later in time for the raffle, and that was it. The other guys came back to find a ravaged buffet and got to eat in a working warehouse. A slight faux pas on the part of planners, I think.
During the party, Ugo pulled me aside to tell me he had seen the problem with my raise, and had personally watched the owner sign the paperwork and had walked it over to payroll himself. In all the confusion, he added an extra 50 cents to the increase, so I'm now making 0.16% more than I was making at PODS. My check on the 31st will include the retroactive increase for the previous two pay periods.
Did one more run to 7th Street, came back, and chilled while eating very good salsa and the last bits of the beef and chicken dishes (the pork tray was completely gone by the time I got to it - evidently I missed something good!) Eventually, Kirsten came to get me, and I began a well-earned four-day weekend.
So, how was your day?
Oh, spotted along Hwy 80: A store called Guns, Fishing, and Other Stuff. I need a gift card.
