Now Mike Shanahan wishes he hadn't gotten his wish.

Denver's coach wanted Kansas City to win on Sunday so that the Broncos wouldn't back into the playoffs but be motivated to play their best football.

Instead, the Broncos tumbled into the offseason when Joe Nedney's 36-yard field goal with 1:56 left in overtime sent the San Francisco 49ers past the stunned Broncos 26-23.

"Well, you want to play your best football this time of year," Shanahan said. "If we played like we did today, we wouldn't go very far in the playoffs. If we played like we did last couple of weeks, we had a chance to do something special."

Very good game. Our defense really clamped down with multiple stands in the red zone, and Walt Harris made a great case for extending his contract with three takeaways, one for a touchdown.

Now comes the off-season. Our needs are pretty obvious: a better pass rush, another good receiver, and some younger, faster offensive linemen.

sigh. Time to put [livejournal.com profile] baka49er back in cold storage until the draft...

[livejournal.com profile] kshandra got an invite to a NYE PJ party; one that I gathered was a girls thing. Since I'm not much for staying up late or big social events, I'm perfectly happy staying at home tonight and switching between The Twilight Zone and COPS. If I'm up at midnight, I'll toast the new year with a beer. If not, then I'll wake up tomorrow with a paid day off to start things off.

The past year was interesting in many ways. I started the year at PODS, but even before I was fired I was beginning to feel that my time there was going to be limited. Too many MBAs, too many layers of management. I often wonder what would have happened if I hadn't been canned and went into management there. Ah, the road not taken... After a fairly short job search, I got hired by Lord & Sons, briefly quit, was convinced to come back, and had it turn into a very good job - probably the best I've had since i was driving for SuperShuttle.

Kirsten and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary in high style. Other than that, I wasn't as social as I'd like to be. Part of it was my schedule and our chronic car troubles and finances, part of it was my mental state which causes me to have a hrd time getting "up" for interacting with large groups.

Writing this year was a total bust. The Concordat is still a formless mass of ideas and notes. I really need someone to co-write this with me, or just use it as the basis for some short fiction of my own. Trying to write "real" science-fiction is a daunting task, and as usual the twin demons of time and energy are working against me.

Physically, I'm in the best shape I've been in since my Army days. Still bugged by the usual complaints one has when you're immune system is fighting with one hand tied behind its back. No resolution on the teeth issue, but at least I din't loose any more this year! My strength and endurance are at a pretty good level for a 40 year old with my medical history.

Oh, yeah. I turned 40. Big deal.

The Giants broke my heart (again) and the Niners showed signs of life. big hopes for both teams in 2007.

So, what are my hopes for the coming year? I'd like to find a way to get my Class A with all the endorsements needed for working interstate hauling without having to quit my job for the school. I'm hoping to get my brain focused on writing enough to get something finished and submitted somewhere. I definitely plan on getting to spend more time with Kylie the Wonder Niece and the Baby To Be Named Later. Hopefully, somehow, I'll get a game going either face-to-face or online.

Happy new years, everyone!

Some moron just let off a few bursts from an AK series rifle across the street. I'd know that sound anywhere. Police have been called.
