It's a ball game, not a souvenir stand!
Aug. 9th, 2003 09:22 amIt happened again last night! In the 5th inning of the Giants-Phillies game, pitcher Jesse Foppert came up to bat with a man on first, and ripped a screaming drive into the left field corner.. a sure triple!
Until a fan leaned over and picked up the ball.
Evidently this dunderhead didn't see the umpire signaling fair, didn't notice Foppert racing around the bases, didn't hear 41,502 other fans screaming in joy as Ransom headed for home.. all he saw was a baseball in the outfield and assumed it was his to take. So he leaned over the wall, and picked it up. Ground rule double, runner held at third.
Do people not notice there is a professional sporting event going on? Are they incapable of understanding the concept of a ball in play? It seems that we are seeing this more and more.. leaning over walls in the outfield to steal fly balls that should have been outs, picking up live balls along the lines.. stay in your bloody seats! If a ball comes at you, look at the umpire! They signal fair or foul ball. Look at the players! If the left fielder is coming after that ball at a dead run it is a pretty good clue it is fair. Look at the base runner.. if he is running the bases, don't touch the fucking ball!
Luckily, this didn't end up costing us any runs, Foppert and Ransom were driven in by another batter, but this just ticks me the hell off.
San Francisco Giants: 9
Philadelphia Phillies: 1
In other news, Barry Bonds hit a home run into McCovey Cove that travelled 477 feet. He's now 12 away from tying Willie Mays.
