Incredible writing, and Fermor mixes in descriptions of the landscape, comments on the Magyar language, the migrations of the various peoples through the Danube valley, and the migratory habits of storks with peerless ease. Given that's a part of the world you've expressed interest in, I think you'd find a glimpse of lost Mitteleuropa fascinating.
