The Snark Must Flow

Trolling around on Yahoo!Answers' Religion & Spirituality section. The question was:

Atheists: Who will save your soul?

My answer: )

I better get best answer for that one.

Rhythm and Algorhythm

iTunes has this fun feature called the Genius Playlist. Select a song you like and ask the program to create a playlist based off that song from your entire library. Obviously, the larger and more diverse your collection, the better this feature works. But with a little tweaking, you get some good mix tapes, as we elderly folk call them.

Listening to my favorites folder, and Harvey Danger's Flagpole Sitta came on. I thought I'd see what I'd get with the Genius picking the mix. Pretty good set list:

  1. Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger

  2. The Way - Fastball

  3. It's All Been Done - Barenaked Ladies

  4. Cannonball - The Breeders

  5. Hook - Blues Traveler

  6. Then The Morning Comes - Smash Mouth

  7. Changes - David Bowie

  8. Party Hard - Andrew W.K.

  9. Love Rollercoaster - Red Hot Chili Peppers

  10. Always Something There To Remind Me - Naked Eyes

  11. Wake Up- Rage Against The Machine

  12. The Promise - When In Rome

  13. Brian Wilson - Barenaked Ladies

  14. Pump It Up - Elvis Costello

  15. Devil's Haircut - Beck

  16. Sleeping In - Postal Service

  17. What's The Frequency, Kenneth? - R.E.M.

  18. Our Lips Are Sealed - The Go-Go's

  19. Burning Down the House - Talking Heads

  20. Pinch Me - Barenaked Ladies

  21. Can't Get Enough Of You Baby - Smash Mouth

  22. Rebel, Rebel - David Bowie

  23. Beds Are Burning - Midnight Oil

  24. All The Young Dudes - Mott The Hoople

  25. And She Was - Talking Heads

One of those was a song I'd never heard before, Sleeping In by the Postal Service. The joys of [personal profile] kshandra and me sharing the iTunes account. Not complaining at all.

I'm not dead yet!

Pardon my extended absence, but my computer hard drive was dying and a friend has been repairing it. I expect to be online full time again soon.

I come today to speak of Giftmas. It was a good thing. Spent the morning at my sister's place. All the nieces, my mom, Kirsten and I, we all enjoyed a fun morning. Good breakfast as well. I'm at work now, doing a few hours of prep for tomorrow. Mainly confirming trips and making sure the drivers get their work.

As for presents, I am happy with my haul. I got a bear you can microwave or freeze for warm/cold bear, socks, and the Ars Magica book for the Byzantine Empire. Kirsten and I also managed to buy each other the same item: slippers. I got her these neat thermal booties at REI (good for home and Playa) and she got me Giants slippers.

Random bits of life

  • Darby's current gas mileage: 21.5 mpg

  • Finally, finally got CivIV back on the computer and running right.

  • Only took four re-downloads from Amazon.

  • CivV and the Steam engine have been removed with great prejudice.

  • The Giants won the NL West!

  • Other than that, life has been boring.

A Vulgar Display of Facebook

The closest I'm ever getting to being in Pantera:

Close to greatness

Phil Anselmo was Pantera's lead singer.

A virtual brush with greatness!

Really fucking pissed off right now.

After running a couple of errands this morning, I decided to see if I could get a good deal on Civilization V. I simply can't find my CivIV disks, and am jonesing for conquest.

Woo-hoo! Steam has it for $15! Log in, create an account, make the order and... nothing. I download the downloader, and it installs, but then I'm prompted to log in. And the fucking system tells me there's no such account!

I loathe goddamn downloader software. Give me a fucking link to the zip file. I can right-click with the best of them. You have my money, give me my game without having to install something else on my computer. Because that always fucks up.

Go to Steam's customer service area.. and find I need to create a new account there! Do so, and no see that there is no way to actually speak to someone. Just an email form that someone may or may not read. In the mean time, they have my money, I have nothing. Steam sucks.

That explains the SWAT team...

texts between me and [personal profile] kshandra just now.

Kirsten: Have a piece of cheese or two while I think about it; I'll get back to you.
me: Check. Had salsa, will survive. Text me, as I'm going to kill things for awhile.
Kirsten: sounds good.
me: Then I'll play Civ IV.

Dear numerous people:

We get it. Y'all are so much more evolved than us Neanderthals who enjoy sports and like the spectacle of the SuperBowl. And they way you so cleverly mangle the game's name and feign ignorance of the event? Hysterical! Just like last year. And the year before that. Oh, and just about every year since I first got on the internet 20+ years ago.

Why people cannot just ignore the event and not try to show off their disdain is beyond me.

A geeky question...

what model calculator do you own? Do you still use it on a regular basis?

I own a TI-30XA. I figure that since the one thing I really need to brush up on if I'm going back to school is math, I'd find an algebra book and start force-teaching myself. Having a good calculator to help seem,s to be a good idea.
