'Sex pest' seal attacks penguin

An Antarctic fur seal has been observed trying to have sex with a king penguin.

The South African-based scientists who witnessed the incident say it is the most unusual case of mammal mating behaviour yet known.

The incident, which lasted for 45 minutes and was caught on camera, is reported in the Journal of Ethology.

The bizarre event took place on a beach on Marion Island, a sub-Antarctic island that is home to both fur seals and king penguins.

Why the seal attempted to have sex with the penguin is unclear. But the scientists who photographed the event speculate that it was the behaviour of a frustrated, sexually inexperienced young male seal.

Speaking as a former frustrated, sexually inexperienced young male, I can almost emphasize with the seal.

But don't mess with the penguins, dude.

Yes, I went to a Duran Duran concert.

While I can't say that I'm a big fan, I've enjoyed a lot of their music over the years, and when kshandra bought a four-pack for the show, going was a natural.

I had a good time. The opening act, Your Vegas was very entertaining even with the lead singer hobbling around on a broken foot. Kiri and I really enjoyed spending time with britgeekgrrl, and I had a really good, expensive, plastic cup of Cabernet Sauvignon.

After a really quick break, Duran Duran took the stage. The set list and commnetary is lifted with permission from Kirsten's post on the subject.

After the show, and dropping BGG off, we had to drive back to Mountain View to pick up Darby from her workplace, and we both drove home. Got in at around 0100.
