There's a little more to it than that..

Ladies, gentlemen, a brief announcement.

There is one hell of a lot more to FANDOM than writing kinky sex stories about the characters!

I am sick to death of people who see this activity as the be-all and end-all of fandom. Some of these folks don't even know what fandom is or its history. The term is being debased by people who assume that they have to establish their own "fandom" that has walls stronger than Helm's Deep.

Diversify, people! So you love Harry Potter? Go read Le Guin! A Wizard of Earthsea is fantastic in every way, and will not prevent you from reading more Harry Potter. [livejournal.com profile] ataniell93, this doesn't refer to you. I know your interests are diverse. But some of these people!

Go to a general-interest science-fiction convention. Don't mention your particular obsession for an entire weekend. You'll be amazed at what happens.

Just had to get that off my chest.

I have some lovely friends who use the term "fandom" to mean "the TV show I watch religiously and read and write fanfic about." I wince every time they do. Thus the icon.

Technically fandom and TV are about the same age. The first TV broadcast was during the 1930-something(1939?) New York World'd Fair.

Since science fiction fandom dates from the early 20's, your premise already fails the veracity test. Since SF-TV fandom didn't start until decades later, your statement has fallen even farther away from legitimacy.

I thought fand only dated back to the ealy 30s. Or, at best the late 20s. As that's when Gernsback started publishing an SF magazine (Amazing, as I recall).

And I did say "nearly".

Thank you!!! It gets out of control sometimes.

Rather than "fandom," the more appropriate term for those whom you describe might be "fanboydom".... :P

While sex is an important part of life (I wouldn't even be here without it...), it's not the only important activity in which people engage. By extension, it shouldn't be the only important activity in which characters engage.

Then again, we're probably both preaching to the choir on this....

NONKINKY sex can be so tedious though...

There's a reason "media fen" tend to annoy the hell out of "trufen". :-(

Star Trek started the downhill slide. Star Wars created the avalanche.

What did X-Files and Harry Potter do, then? Steepen the slope?

The avalanche hit the bottom long before either of those.
