Writer's Block: Once upon a time…

[Error: unknown template qotd]

I've got three. Can you name them?

"He was one hundred and seventy days dying and not yet dead..."

"Once there was a dead man."

"On the 24th of February, 1815, the watch-tower of Notre Dame de la Garde signaled the arrival of the three-master Pharaon, from Symrna, Trieste, and Naples."

God, I know the first one, but... *googles in frustration* Ah, of course. (No spoiler, since I needed help.)

The second refers to Jerome Corbell, protagonist of A World Out Of Time.

No clue on the third.

I remember reading Rammer in Galaxy way back when. Still my go-to comfort book.

“Down and Out” was the sequel in Galaxy, part II of the book; the issue featured good cover art of Earth orbiting a weirdly reddish but still recognizable Jupiter…

The first one is "The Stairs My Destination" AKA "Tigger! Tigger" by Alfred E. Milne-Bester. The whole line goes;

"He was one hundred and seventy days dying and not yet dead. He fought
for survival with the passion of a beast in a trap. He was delirious and
rotting, coming downstairs now, bump bump bump, on the back of his head,
behind Christopher Robin."

Winnie the Pooh is my name
and the Woods are my nation
A treehouse is my dwelling place
A Hunny-pot, my destination.

The third is OBVIOUSLY The Count of Monte-Cristo.

Not obvious if you don't know the story. When my sister's kids are older I'm going to introduce them to Dumas and Stevenson.
