Good grief!

I made it out of work with less than nine hours, and got home in a reasonable time! What is the world thinking these days?

Of course, I almost missed my stop on light rail, and then almost didn't notice my bus pull up because of the book I'm currently reading.

Ever have one of those books that was just inaccessible for years; then suddenly it makes sense? I've had them in the past (Dune and The Lord of the Rings are two that took me numerous tries to finally get.) Until this week I've had the same problem with Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep. Don't know why, something about the prose, of the story, would just stop me cold after a few chapters. But I needed something to read, and decided to give it a try again.

Wow. I'm very happy I gave it another chance. About 170 pages in and loving it. Interestingly, I loved A deepness in the Sky on the first reading. The books are somewhat similar in construction, so I have no idea why Fire eluded me for so long.

So, what are y'all reading right now?

Draco Tavern by Niven and some P.G. Wodehouse short stories which are going slow.

Just finished some DC graphic novels on what happened to their heros in the 1950's.

Would those be Darwyn Cooke's "The New Frontier"? Excellent mini-series.

One and the same.

I'm trying to get into "Standing In the Rainbow" by Fannie Flagg - nothing too do with the box, just my crazy schedule and crazier life. (more on that in a post - maybe later tonight.)

The first time I tried to read 'Neverwhere' it went clunk. Picked up a year later and couldn't put it down.
'Lord of the Rings' continues to go clunk, but I now own my own copy so I can bang my head against whenever I want.

Lately, I'm in a recycle phase on books (where I'm re-reading old favorites instead of reading new-to-me books), and right now I'm recycling Harry Turtledove's "War Between the Provinces" series - Sentry Peak is the current title, to be followed by Marching Through Peachtree and Advance and Retreat unless I get out of recycle phase before then.

(Usually, what gets me out of recycle phase is a new book coming out in a favorite series/universe - I get the new book, and while I'm at it, I browse the shelves (real or virtual) and see if there's anything else that's mildly interesting - it's easier to buy "less interesting" books when they're part of a purchase group that has at least one "must-have" in it. Current series on the must-have list are Turtledove: World War/Colonization and his universe that started with How Few Remain; Weber: Honor Harrington; Drake: Republic of Cinnabar Navy; and Moon: Vatta's War.)

Got my copy of Widdershins yesterday. That's my main book right now. I'm trying not to read it too quickly, so I won't be too bummed when it's over. :)

Currently reading Steve Perry's (not the Journey guy) new book, The Musashi Flex. It appears to be a precurser to the Matador series, which is one of my favorites. I am just glad that he is finally writing something of his own again and not another media tie-in.

Sort of in between at present, so I'm re-reading stuff -- Heyer, Wm. Buckley -- I've got a couple of biographies to read, but haven't been in the mood. SWMBO wanted to hit the library, and for the life of me I couldn't find anything that sparked my interest in the new books, so I grabbed a pile of old friends.
