From out of left field.

I'm watching a show on one-hit wonders. Coming in at about 85 on their list was Norman Greenbaum's Spirit in the Sky.

OK, you can't get more Christian Rock than this, and I'm a hardcore atheist. But I love this song! It's the guitar riff.. yeah, that's it!

As a former Christian, I was always curious at these lines in that song: "Never been a sinner / I never sinned".

They contradict a basic tenet of every flavor of that religion I'm familiar with ...which is only a matter of intellectual curiousity to me these days, having been an agnostic for some years now.

But I like the song too. I think Christianity wound up with a lot of the good melodies, one way or another ...although I mostly prefer their stuff that's at least fifty years old :>

Modern Christian music, what I've heard of it, seems to get a free pass from music critics because of its content.

Hey! Men Without Hats weren't a one-hit wonder! They were a two-hit wonder!

This is a show on VH-1. The list was based on available footage.

I never thought of that as a Christian song. My memory of talking about it amongst fellow Christians when it first came out is that we thought it was dreadfully shallow.

This is one of the few cases where I have no strong preference for either the original version or the cover (by Doctor and the Medics - I'll bet you [livejournal.com profile] docwebster has it, or can find it). They both just kick serious ass.
