God damn it!

Once again, it is time for the annual Baycon Programming dance! The cone is about two weeks away. I've been a panelist for the last few years. And for the third year in a row, I have no idea if I'm coming back this year!

How difficult is it to compile a list of e-mail addresses and make contact with panelists in January? I've already had contact with Orycon.. and that is in November! This is just unacceptable. Because I am expecting to be a panelist. If I'm not, that means that neither Kiri or I can afford the convention.

Several e-mails to programming have gone unanswered, and I've even e-mailed the chair to ask what was up? Nothing.

Pisses me off. The con is drowning in politics if they can't get a simple staff position filled in time to contact panelists in a timely manner.

Do you know who's running their programming this year? I'm wondering if it's the same person who did Conjecture's last year (but not this year).

Two weeks? Nope!

The con is *ONE* week away!!!

I tried to offer to do a screening of a fan-produced video
(maybe you've heard about it; if not, watch [livejournal.com profile] sfbay_sf_fans for a
potential announcement), and got a "Thank you for your
interest. We are unable to help you," with no more info
added.

P.S.: I hope that you are able to go -- especially since you
guys live in SJ now.

At least you got that much contact....

One of the reasons I don't bother volunteering for Baycon panels anymore.

From their latest PR, it looks as if they have been inviting people. They have a head of Programming (Kathryn Daugherty with Dierdre Saoirse Moen as second) and a reasonably full staff as well. You may not be on their panelist list this year. I've been through that dance myself. It happens. People fall off. It bites, but that's how it goes.

Latest PR? Am I high, or shouldn't we have been getting them, as we were convention attendees last year? And I find it utterly appalling that this "reasonably full staff" is apparently incapable of answering their email without so much as a "piss off, we've had it with you."

I wasn't asked either...

but then you still actually fir the bill of what BayCon wants, hard sciency types not fags like me wondering where all the queer characters and themes are. I find terrible that the main Bay Area Convention has no queer programming, unless I bitch and get a panel thrown in, and I've gotten tired of fighting it.

Near as I can tell, Kathryn Daughtry is head of programming this year. Offline we will talk about my feelings on this.

[identity profile] ciarhwyfar.livejournal.com 2003-05-16 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Kathryn is indeed in charge of programming. Last week I got a panic call about when my concerts were scheduled because they were trying to program my concert people for evening panels (the concerts don't start until 9, regular panels stop at 7, this shouldn't have been an issue)

The semi-final program grid just came out this week.

I am in charge of a programming area and I don't get responses from them.

I'll check the grid to see if your name comes up when I get home.

What does it take to get a concert at Baycon? Months and months ago I sent e-mail to "music@baycon.org" or whatever the address was on the web site and got no response. I tried it again; no response.

I tried "programming@baycon.org" and heard nothing.

Also, why are the concerts always at night where they conflict with the open filking?

This is probably better taken offline rather than continuing to take up space here on a subject most people probably don't care about.

Agreed. I can be reached at "figmo@rahul.net (mailto:figmo@rahul.net).
