gridlore: Doug looking off camera with a grin (M-16)

Oh Please!

Now that they think they have caught the D.C. sniper, we are beginning to hear loads of bullshit.

To begin with, CNN was making a big deal over the fact that the suspect shot Expert with the M-16 while in the army. So what? The '16 is an easy weapon to fire, and every soldier has ample opportunities to shoot the required 36 out of 40.

Secondly, I heard a talking head describe DOOM as a "sniping game." Right. Last time I looked, sniping does not involve automatic weapons and pulse cannons.

Although the rail gun in Quake is a different matter entirely...

However, any decent attempt at setting up a sniping position in Quake will be interpreted as "camping", which leads either to in-game death or merely ostracism by your friends, depending on the server settings.

Support pukes don't get as much oppurtunity, and it appears that's what the guy was...

The scary thing was that I was reading about the same thing they were talking about (sniper hides in cars/trucks) a couple weeks ago... (I can't remember where...) and that it used to be an IRA tactic.

The news, so far, are making a bigger deal out of the Islamic connection than that. They've even pointed out that, because of a restraining order, it was illegal for him to own as it was...

...And the only AR15 variant the Maryland County Police chose to show as a possible example:

...Is a museum piece.

*smirk*

A gen-u-ine prototype CAR-15.

(The stock extends and the very short barrel/triangular handguards are obvious.)

(Want one!)

One thing that I found amusing is that, in addition to his active-duty time, the accused sniper also apparently spent a year in the Oregon Army National Guard. I'm here in Sinai with a battalion from...

You guessed it: The Oregon Army National Guard. (No, he wasn't assigned to our battalion (http://www.guardian186.info).)

To paraphrase Full Metal Jacket, this shows "what one motivated Guardsman and his rifle can do!" ;-)
