Irrepressible glee

I just ordered Thousand Suns, written by [livejournal.com profile] maliszew. I took part in many of the discussions about the book, and offered to do some work on the default setting military.

Along with my hard-bound copy, I got a PDF download. I get a credit, and looking at the setting section, there's my work, ready for people to use.

I will never get tired of this feeling.

The entire game is excellent, and I am going to run it this summer. Using my own Concordant setting, of course. Which means I'm going to need to get busy. Because we're all adults with lives, I'm figuring on a once a month weekend gaming/dinner/more gaming session, with some side stuff done on a dedicated LiveJournal group. So, if you are local, and are interested, please fill out the poll. I emphasize local because I'm using this to plan things. Thanks.

You've seen Blake's 7 ?! I can't believe that crossed the Atlantic.

[identity profile] gridlore.livejournal.com 2008-02-16 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Back in the day we got all that great British SF. Blake's 7, Star Cops, Dr. Who, Survivors... It was a cash cow for the local PBS stations who could depend on huge turnouts from SF fans during membership drives.

One of the videos I want to do if we ever get all the DVDs and a computer I can do movies on is one of B7 to Bon Jovi's Blaze of Glory

I shall be picking your brain again in the future and, with luck, I can even pay you for your efforts this time. :) I have a book on starships and running a "big ship" campaign on the schedule and I'm certain you have quite a few insights on these subjects that'd serve me well. And then of course there's the ground forces book further down the line ...

I've got a working draft of Shoe Stores of the Third Imperium Thousand Suns ready if you like...

Not so interested in shoe stores, but if you could come up with a piece on postage stamps I might give it a look.

Well, I'm not entirely local (Sacramento ftw!) but I'm close enough that once a month could be feasible. The catch would be that I would be entirely dependent on the train, which stops running at a certain point in the evening, and doesn't pick up until early the next morning. Hence, if I were to do this, crash space wouldn't be nice, it'd be a necessity. ;)

(And while I didn't mark 'would need a ride', I would probably have to have some explanation on how to shuffle back and forth from the train station. I'm not afraid of public transit, though.)

If you can train into San Jose Dirdon, the 64 line stops literally 80 feet from our front door.

[identity profile] katster.livejournal.com 2008-02-17 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Easy. Not only the trains, but the Amtrak buses go there, so I could work that out. So if you're up for a not-quite local, I could be up for it.

Something Has To Be Wrong Here...

You're running a sci-fi game.

That isn't D&D 3.5 based.

That isn't based upon thinly-veiled yaoi.

Did the world just blow a gasket? Or is there somebody that is planning a game that I want to play?

Yaoi?

[identity profile] gridlore.livejournal.com 2008-02-17 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I had to look up that word. NO. (As [livejournal.com profile] madelineusher laughs her ass off at her old, conservative uncle...)

Judging from what I'm seeing in the poll, the people want Exploration, Intrigue, and Deep Mysteries. Considering I've been reading Simmons, Reynolds, and Banks recently, I think I can come up with something.. I like my universes hard SF, with as few techno-miracles as possible unless they fit into the setting and make sense.

Hmmm. I am interested in hearing more and I might like to buy a subscription to your product.

Well, given my love of Ken Hite and Fortean shit, and the fact that I loved Seeker, I imagine a plot centering around a Macguffin, perhaps some sort of carved bird or small furry lizard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Winslow) or something, and the various groups searching for it, coveting it, demanding its destruction, or offering large sums of cash to forget it ever existed would be in order. That seems to offer what people are asking for, as well as allowing a good number of character types who you might find on an artifact hunt.

You mean The Winslow? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Winslow)

Now, this would be an interesting game.

"Okay, we have a lizard barely larger than my puppy, which can talk but has all the IQ of a toaster that mated with a lawyer, is utterly indestructible and immortal, it is the focus of over a thousand very violent religions, yet nobody can explain why it's so important, not even the superhigh galactic idiots."

"Yep."

"And, it's on this ship. And, we're going to take it to this planet in the middle of some of the worst territory in the Galaxy, why?"

"Because it pooped an arrow on the map."

..."Okay, I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't ME that was going nuts."

Incidentally, should you ever decide to LARP Dante's Inferno... call me, 'cause that would be AWESOME!! :)

[identity profile] aurictech.livejournal.com 2008-02-17 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
That might actually make airfare worthwhile....

I'm Obviously Not Local, But...

[identity profile] aurictech.livejournal.com 2008-02-17 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Here's how I would respond to your poll:

Would you be interested in a monthly game in San Jose? No (airfare is a bit spendy for a monthly game)

Your preferred SF genre? Exploration, Intrigue and War

Firefly, B5, Star Wars, or Star Trek? B5 and Which Star Trek (I've never gotten around to watching Firefly [it came out during one or more of my deployments]; as for Star Trek, TOS and DS9 plz)

[identity profile] mikkop.livejournal.com 2008-02-17 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to vote in this poll, but as you said, coming to the game once a month from an another continent might be a bit hard.

I might have to pester my friends here to GM a scifi game for me, though.

(Oh, and as I said on the TML, I wasn't that much interested in the game from the first reports, but I still might buy it as it seems not to be standard d20 stuff. At least I could read it for ideas...)

My apologies. I missed the local part entirely. That's what I get for skimming.

Sorry the poll failed, mate. (No, I didn't vote on it.)
