Jerry Falwell Dead at 73

The Rev. Jerry Falwell, the television evangelist who founded the Moral Majority and used it to mold the religious right into a political force, died Tuesday shortly after being found unconscious in his office at Liberty University, a school executive said. He was 73.

I'm sorry, but I cannot, will not, mourn the passing of a man who dedicated his life to destroying civil liberties, establishing one-religion rule in America, and was a complete, howling hypocrite. Jerry Falwell was not a Christian. He was a bigoted, power-hungry, monster who used religion the way Hitler used German nationalism.

In a way, I almost wish I was a theist. Then my image of Jerry getting a very rude shock right about now would have more meat to it.

Then, as a (bad) theistic Quaker I shall imagine Jerry getting hot sand packed up his fudge hole by the minions of hell for you.

I took a philosophy course way back when, and we were discussing the concepts of heaven and hell. The professor said he always imagined the worst possible punishment was for the damned to enjoy Heaven for one year. After that, they are deposited outside the walls. No lake of fire, no hot sands, just the knowledge of what they could have had for eternity.

That's the fate I'd like visited on these Religious Right Whack-jobs.
