I can't believe it.

I caught Jordin Kare in a scientific error.

Jordin is the ubergeek. He wears shirts that "As a matter of fact, I am a rocket scientist." He is currently designing interstellar drives for NASA. His garage is monitored by the MIBs.

He's also a very good filker. I was listening to one of his songs, about lunar mining, when I caught a line about miners "waiting for Earth rise." Sorry, wrong.

The Moon is tidal-locked to the Earth. The Earth hangs motionless in the sky. If you are on the near side, you can always see it. If on the far side, you never see it. The only way to observe an Earthrise is to be in lunar orbit.

Wondering if that's actually the song written by Diana Gallagher?

"The Lunar miner stirs in his converted cannister
rubs his eyes and glances at the time"

It could be. This was off Parody Violation, which is mostly other people's stuff. Still, any filker should know better.

Maybe they're mining right on the limb, where the effects of libration (http://www.btinternet.com/~kburnett/kepler/mooneph.html) result in Luna's only earthrises?

Okay, yeah, it's a stretch. I'll give you a full geek smackdown score on this one.

Which of course could inspire a follow-up filk, "Good Librations."

Although personally, I prefer Good Libations....

Damn it John! Now I've got the tune in my head and I'm going to have to write the silly thing!

So, is BayCon a GO or NOGO?

I'm not very optimistic about BayCon right now. Assuming that this Sinai thing happens, I'll be at Ft. Carson over Memorial Day weekend. If we're not training that weekend, I should be able to make it out to San Jose. At this point, I'm calling it a 20% chance. I'll try to get more info this week, and I'll keep y'all posted.
