gridlore: Doug looking off camera with a grin (Me - Thoughtful)

A few random notes...

I have a new computer, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] the_ogre. We have a spare keyboard, now I just need a monitor, mouse, and (eventually) a good set of speakers. The box has Windows XP loaded (IIRC, it's one of the Win2K variants) and I'm going to partition the drive and have [livejournal.com profile] mdlbear set me up with a good Linux build.

Work frustrates me. In this economy, what kind of idiot do you have to be to fuck up a retail job? One of the seasonals blew off his shift today. 18 year old guy, started out strong but soon was more interested in joking around with his friends. And the girl I closed with! Oy! We cannot get it through her head that we recover the store first, then do go-backs if time allows. Having a few things left out in the morning is forgivable.. having half the store look like crap is not!

I'm getting regulars, though. People who ask for me when they come in if I'm not at the register. Sold a woman close to two grand in furniture because she trusted my opinion. That's a good feeling. I wish people would stop expecting me to be a walking wine encyclopedia.

The urge to write is brewing. I may be doing some clean-up on the bits of Interstellar Wars that I wrote (if [livejournal.com profile] pauldrye so desires.) Other than that, I'm coming out opf a period where Traveller just grayed onh me for a while. Maybe it's the IW playtest, but I'm getting interested in finishing (ha! Try barely starting!) The Lunion subsector project.

On that note, I'm thinking about creating my own label for any PDFs I do, since I'd like to get a little money for them. What do y'all think of Plummeting Penguin Press as a name?

Hell, I think I even have some short story ideas germinating in me. Am I ready to try that, finally? Will I have a Pro Party in 2005?

Sometimes, I feel really old. The girl I closed with tonight had never heard of Led Zepplin. Seriously.

UC Berkeley Golden Bears: 41
Stanford Univeristy Cardinal: 6

Cal keeps The Ax, and the correct score for the 1982 game remains in place.

For Thanksgiving, the Shiraz or the Chardonnay? Or both? The Yellow Tail is affordable enough....

and so to bed.

Talk about feeling old. I've had to explain the New Coke fiasco to THREE of my employees at work. Eesh.

I guess I'm old enough... I only moved here in 200, and I know about the New Coke fiasco.

If Jon Z. so desires, actually. Once Loren and I submitted our bits of IW, he took over the driving.

Why does the result of the current UCB and Stanford game mean the correct score for the 1982 game stays in place?

The Play

[identity profile] gridlore.livejournal.com 2004-11-21 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
The 1982 Big Game is famous for The Play, the game-winning, seven lateral, kickoff return with no time left that won the game for Cal.

When Stanford wins the Big game, the 1982 entry on the Ax has Stanford winning 20-19.

Damn ... what a bunch of sore losers... they argued the play and lost ... live with it. :)

You'll be glad to know...

...your 12-yr-old BIL knows Led Zeppelin well.

I love the idea of Plummeting Penguin Press. :)

You're not old...she's just sheltered.

Yay for new computers and regulars.

For Thanksgiving, the Shiraz or the Chardonnay? Or both? The Yellow Tail is affordable enough....

A post on NRO's The Corner (http://www.nationalreview.com/thecorner/04_11_22_corner-archive.asp#046351) mentioned Australia's Little Penguin (http://www.wine.com/wineshop/product_detail.asp?pProduct_ID=PDXCAPenguinParty&Nu=p_family_name) label....

Several correspondents recommended a Pinot Noir or Riesling; in my experience, a Riesling goes well with the varied flavors of a Thanksgiving meal.

We have a bottle of Little Penguin Cabernet Sauvignon. Been waiting for the right time to open it.

Kirsten prefers reds, and we had an excellent Shiraz with Thanksgiving last year.

I know how to dial a rotary dial phone without using the dial...

...and I still like movies that could have been abruptly ended in 15 minutes if cell phones were around.

Still, not old.
