I've done this, and it wasn't that hard. But I grew up in the shadow of Lassen Peak, and hiking to the top of Lassen is a steep 2.2 mile trail. :)

It's really pretty up there.

Ah, but Lassen is extinct, or at least very dormant. I want to climb a live volcano. I did Kileau when I was stationed in Army, and images of that hike have stayed with me all these years.

Naw, you're thinking of Shasta. ;)

Lassen's gone off in the last century, so it's techinically still an active volcano, one of only two in the continental United States. (The other is Mt. St. Helens, obviously.) Here's a pretty impressive picture of said eruption (http://geography.sierra.cc.ca.us/booth/California/landform_provinces/mt_lassen_eruption.jpg), taken from my hometown. :)

But yeah, I'll grant you that the active volcanos here in the states aren't as exciting as the ones in Hawaii, and that would be a fun thing to do sometime.
