The All-Important Baseball Report #2 - Barry does it again, and again..

Here we are, a bit over a week into the 2004 campaign and things are a mixed bag for the Giants. We're currently 5-3, and sitting on top of the NL West, but we have a couple of good and bad points.

Good Points:

1. Bonds. His presence on the field changes how opponents handle the game.
2. Herges. For a man who wasn't expected to be our closer, he's done very well. 5 saves so far.
3. Neifi Perez. The big surprise of the year, Neifi has finally woken up his bat, getting the hits when we need them.

Bad Points:

1. Our pitching staff. It's taped together right now, with Nen and Schmidt starting the season on the DL.
2. General health. We are very susceptible to injuries.

So, while it's too early to tell, I'm looking for the Giants to repeat as NL West Champions. This will happen if we get our pitching under control.

The NL West bet:

I will personally remove my own scrotum with a cheese grater if this keeps up. Well, maybe not, but I will be very, very, very surprised.

You forgot to mention one positive - The Padres are also in the NL West, so the Giants can't possibly drop into last place.

The Padres are a very different team this year. They made some very good moves over the winter, and might pull out of the cellar.

Alas, when they made Petco Park Barry-proof, they forgot it would stop most everybody else from hitting homers. So far, there have been 3 HR hit there.. none by the Padres.

They are getting a little frustrated down there...

One potential negative point, not mentioned above, could take Bonds out of the picture. If the ripples from the steroid controversy end up engulfing Bonds, that could conceivably eliminate him as a factor in the Giants' lineup, at least for part of the season.

Not likely, of course, but in a universe in which Don Denkinger ~spit~ still draws breath, one must consider the awful possibility.
