In the darkness
Went for my first ride at night yesterday. The occasion that got me out in the cold was game night at a friend's place. I'd always gotten the invites, but there is a huge difference between three miles on foot, and three miles on a bike. One thing almost stalled me; I could only find one of my nice warm gloves. You folks who live where they have real winter will giggle at me needed heavy clothes to ride in mid-40 temps, but ever since I got sick I tend to be bloody cold.
It was a pretty good ride, the two hills on Coleman were a bit easier going east, and my new lights did a good job on the darker areas of road. Bike lanes 90% of the way. Very little traffic, which helped me focus on riding in a straight line and avoid the occasional hazard. Found Paul and Steph's place with very little difficulty. Hung out with Paul talking bikes, while his three year old son tried to show me everything he owns. One year old Morgan was content to run into things. Paul gave me a copy of the VTA bike map, with all the trails and bike lanes. Very appreciated.
Eventually we played a few games, and I learned that when playing Chez Geek that seven people is just way too much, and you should make sure that everyone actually has a sense of humor before dealing. (Half the fun of the game is reading the flavor text on the cards out loud.)
Things began breaking up, and I decided to head out. Riding back, I missed Coleman (whoops) and came to Blossom Hill. So I added maybe another half-mile. Big deal. Got home, flexed my poor frozen fingers, and crawled into the very warm bed. Slept the sleep of the just.
