Okayy..

Since [livejournal.com profile] mdlbear repaired our computer (and reset the over-driven processor) it's taken the computer a much long time to boot up. Hit the power, hard drive light comes on and it can take a few minutes before it actually starts bleeping at us.

This chilly morning, it was taken longer than normal. I sat here reading The Elements of Style and glancing down to see if the CD and floppy drives had lit up for their self-tests yet. No luck. After a few minutes, I got frustrated, leaned over, gently knocked on the casing saying "Good morning! Time to go to work in there!"

The boot up started immediately

I knew it all along! Technology? Feh! There are magic pixies living in that box!

I've lost track of the number of times over the years I've been doing tech support where the customers problem has been solved by the fact they're asking a tech about the problem.

Oh, yes, Heisenbugs -- they only happen when you're not looking at them.

I have yet to convince my co-workers to try an experiment with the copier: take a picture of the tech, and paste it on the inside of the cover, so the machine thinks he's there.

Oh, come on now!

Everyone knows electronic equipment runs on magic smoke, not pixies.

You just have to show the machines who's in charge. Sometimes all it takes is a credible threat.
