Well, it had to come

I was fired by SuperShuttle yesterday. After seven years.

My god, what a relief to be out of there. The place had down so far downhill, and there is no end to the slope in sight. Bad management, bad decisions. This might turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

The reason they gave me was poor attendance. Evidently, they wanted me to come in and puke all over the keyboard when I had the flu. My manager was quite apologetic when he sacked me, and I knew that they weren't going to try an replace me, this was another cost cutting measure. Screw them.

Now I can apply for new jobs with the ability to say "any day, any shift." That will help immensely. It was time for a change anyway.

I'm confused. If you didn't like it, why didn't you leave? Surely you could have looked for a job before and said "any shift" and then when you got it, told Super Shuttle to go piss off.

I have cancer and epilepsy. SS gave me health insurance. Good reason to stick it out. That, and I was hoping to get back to driving a van this summer.

Nod. Yes, that makes sense. How, if you don't mind me asking, will your illnesses affect other job prospects? I know in NY you have to be seizure free for a year before you can drive. Does the same apply in CA? What are your other options if driving is out?

[identity profile] gridlore.livejournal.com 2002-01-08 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't had a seizure since August, which is when I started taking Trileptal. State law is no commercial driving for one year after the last seizure.

I'm looking at other areas, such as 911 dispatching and the like. They can't discriminate againt ssomeone with controlled epilepsy in those kinds of jobs.

That sucks. I know what it is like to be let go from a shitty job, the paradox of feelings: panic and joy, dissapointment and relief, self lothing and salation. (AT least that is some of what went through my head) I'm glad that you seem to be shouldering the bad and walking down the road of a postive spin.

I will send you good thoughts and positive energy from up north. Right now is a hard time to be out of work, neither Dan nor I have been able to secure a job yet.

You are going to able to have Cobra, or can Kiri's insurance cover your medical needs? Sorry, I'm a Sylvan, and what Sylvan's do best is worry.

I did the numbers yesterday with our HR person at work, and it was just about the same whether we paid for Cobra coverage or just added Doug to my insurance - with the important difference being that adding him to my policy saves us from having to write an extra check every month.

I've got the paperwork in hand. Now I just need to get it filled out. ;-)

I'm glad hon. Less checks is way better! Everything should be payable online, it is so much easier that way.

Prayers and good thoughts on the way.

Man, that sucks. I know where you're coming from. I've had jobs that were going 'south' with no visible end in sight. Hopefully you'll get another, better job soon. I'll keep my fingers crossed. *sending good thoughts your way*

I firmly believe everything happens for a reason - it just may take some time to figure this one out. Candles lit for a well paying job that you like to appear soon.

Joining the ranks of the unemployed

There's one minor blessing in all of this. It turns out you'll be one of the first people in the state to benefit from the new, improved unemployment pay rates that take effect today.

This means you may very well be getting more money each week than most of the high-tech workers on unemployment.

I do hope you applied. It's illegal to fire someone due to illness (which is basically the reason they gave for firing you), so I seriously doubt they'll challenge any claim you file.

If you need anything, please let me know. I'm here.

Hugs,
