Baseball Revisionism

Last night ESPN held a mock trial at Harvard Law School on the question of wether Pete Rose should be allowed in the Hall of Fame.

One of the witnesses was Bill "Spaceman" Lee, famous Red Sox pitcher. He was by far the best witness. When asked by Johnnie Cochran about his upcoming book, he replied "It's a revisionist history of the Red Sox. We win, and the Yankees always lose."

The jury voted to let Rose into the Hall. I'm still split on the subject.

Like him or not, Pete Rose is an integral part of baseball history in the past few decades. You could no more tell the tale of baseball in the current age than you could describe boxing without reference to Muhammed Ali or Mike Tyson or basketballw without mentioning Michael Jordan. That's the impact the man has had on the sport. If you think the Hall of Fame is for the lights of the sport, then perhaps Rose doesn't belong in there for what he did... but if it's just about the fame, the history, the effect, then there couldn't be a record without him.

I think that if there's no proof Rose bet on baseball, they should let him in *after* Shoeless Joe Jackson.
