This movie is rated ARRRRRR!

Went to see Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl last night.

I really liked it. When I first heard the Disney was making movies based on rides at Disneyland, my reaction was that the entire company had jumped the shark. I'm pleased that I was wrong.

The basic plot: A group of pirates are cursed to sail the seas as undead until all the pieces of a cursed Aztec treasure are brought back together. One complication, they need the blood of a pirate who was dropped into the ocean to end the curse.. so his child will do.

Johnny Depp plays pirate captain Jack Sparrow, Orlando Bloom is Will Turner, a blacksmith/sword maker with a past, Keira Knightley is the lovely lady in distress, and Geoffry Rush chews scenery as the cursed Captain Barbossa. The supporting characters do a good job of letting the leads swashbuckle across the screen. Depp is priceless, he is one of the most underrated actors of our day, in my opinion. Bloom is sexy. No duh there.

But the this is a pirate movie, and that means swashbuckling! There are magnificent sword fights, witty repartee, and an impressive dueling between two ships. The magical element only adds to the film.

My only complaint is that there are two sets of Abbott and Costello dimwit comic relief, one British, one pirate.

Note: Stay until the end of the credits! There is a fun Easter Egg at the very end!

This a four ARRR movie.

One of the trailers we got was for the next ride adaptation.. The Haunted Mansion, starring Eddie Murphy. [livejournal.com profile] kshandra mentioned that Murphy is quickly turning into Fred MacMurray. It's true!

I liked the dimwits, especially the British pair. They reminded me a bit of the guards in Holy Grail.

Alas, He is becoming Fred Mc Murray

I still miss the Eddie Murphy from his very first comedy special...do you remember that one? I would love to find it on video.
