One fuzzy penguin.

Among the things I hate about being sick is I tend to ignore the details of my daily hygiene routine. Oh, I shower, brush my teeth and all that, but I'm far more likely to grab the clothes I wore the day before on the grounds that I'm not going anywhere and I know where they are. I also neglect things like shaving.

I have a pretty heavy beard, and it runs from my collar bone to my suborbital ridge. Back in 1995, during my long hospitalization when I was wasn't allowed to shave at all for three weeks, I looked almost bestial. This growth is only five or six days worth, but frankly I hate the way my beard feels on my neck, and even when I wear a full beard, I keep my neck shaved.

So today I'm going to have to find the energy to take a weed-whacker at beat this evolutionary left-over into submission. Bleah.

The South shall rise again, right after breakfast!

As a side effect of my current bout of illness, I'm freaking hungry. And, for some odd reason, I'm craving a good Southern breakfast. Biscuts and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, and ham (yes breakfast in the South uses the whole pig) piles of toast, coffee with loads of cream.. and grits.

I never encountered grits until I was in the Army. Then I learned to love them because they were hot, filling, and could be eaten in about 45 seconds, which left me a leasurely 4 minutes, 15 seconds to eat the rest of my breakfast. Once I started going to the field in winter I really appreciated grits' thermodynamic properties. Corn porridge holds onto heat very well. Some mornings, my first meal consisted of a cup of soup, grits, sausage, and coffee. (We avoided the eggs they brought out like the plague. You really don't want to know what spending hours in a Mermite can will do to scrambled eggs.)

While not ever going to be on anyone's list of favorites, grits are part of my experience of living in Georgia, and like I said, I'd really like a big plate of Southern food right now.

So, how do y'all like your grits?

Oh, the Horror of my Existence

The San Francisco Giants-Pittsburgh Pirates game scheduled for Saturday night was postponed by rain.

The game is scheduled to be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday at 1:35 p.m., though the forecast calls for rain and snow showers and temperatures in the 40s.

Oh, the humanity! Oh, the Angst! No baseball! Everything.. going.. dark...

Even worse, I'M OUT OF BEER!!! How on Ghu's hops & barley-covered Earth did that happen?! (hic)

I shall endure.. a night of no baseball and no beer will try my soul, but there is a light ahead.. a possible double-header!
