gridlore: The word Giants over a baseball (Baseball - SF Giants)

Season called on account of SARS-CoV-19

OK, let's be clear. If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm a baseball fanatic. I live for the Giants. I have preseason rituals that I adhere to religiously. I believe Opening Day should be a national holiday. I own about seven Giants hats.

Knowing all that, you'll understand the gravity of my thoughts here. Shut it down. Five days into the abbreviated season and we have the Marlins with 14 players testing positive, and games being canceled due to the need to clean the clubhouses used by the Marlins! You're going to see more and more big-name players opt out of the season.

And frankly, the season is a joke. 60 games? We can't play four without the plague breaking out! This is not going to work, and even if it somehow reaches the World Series, the winner is going to carry a huge asterisk because of the number of star players sitting out and the shortened season.

Shut it down. Save lives. And as always, wait 'til next year!

Seconded. #TooDamnSoon

In fact, I'll speak the same of the NHL's attempts to even have a playoff season this year. I don't believe it'll matter what the NHL does to secure that season and the teams' personnel and broadcasting support staff involved.

Virus won't care.

Stanley Cup is just going to have to go unawarded for a second time in its history.

We've been through the exact same thing here with the Australian Football League, except that instead of fully cancelling everything, they're trying to squish as many games as they can into less than half the usual season length. When Victoria (my state) tightened restrictions again, they rearranged things so all the games are being played at interstate stadiums. But the 'home of football', the MCG, is here, and if the Grand Final isn't played here people will throw tantrums. I'm watching it play out from the point of view of an outsider, as I don't really follow it, but people are being absolutely idiotic about the whole thing.

Shut it down. The risks outweigh the reward. I hope the baseball people are smarter about it than our football people.

Oh, and we have a state public holiday for Grand Final Eve. It only started in 2018, and I didn't think it would go ahead, but apparently we're still going to get it, just moved to whenever the Grand Final gets held. If it gets held. Which makes me wonder, if they have to hold the Grand Final interstate because of the restrictions, will everything change so that state gets it instead of Victoria? It's all a big mess.
