The Republican attack on veterans.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wcg for pointing this out.

The political tactic of playing up the soldiers on the battlefield while tearing down the reputations of veterans who oppose them could eventually cost the Republicans dearly. It may be one reason that a preponderance of the Iraq war veterans who thus far have decided to run for office are doing so as Democrats.

This ties in nicely with the fact that you have to really search to find someone at the White House with combat experience. The only member of the cabinet with real military experience, Colin Powell, was shoved out the door. The rest of the inner circle all managed to avoid overseas service despite being the perfect age for service in Vietnam.

I'm not one for name calling, but "chickenhawk" really applies. And I think the American people are starting to get sick of it.

Meantime, Bush keeps cutting the benefits veterans were promised for their service.

Battlestar Galactica review

OK, I really liked it.

What, you want more? OK.

The framing story, with the Galactica being retired and turned into a museum was nice, and was used effectively during the story. I believed in this state (although we have the same damn "multiple Earthlike worlds in a single solar system" thing that pissed me off about Serenity) and the Fleet was believable.

The whole look was right. At first the use of current fashions kind of bugged me, but as the show went forward I realized that putting people in SF costumes would have lessened the impact. Seeing people in suits and ties increased the impact. And the tech on the Galactica itself was beautiful. You really saw this as a warship.

Dr. Baltar... OK, i now need to add the series disks to my queue to see what's up with the Cylon sexpot in his head.

I give it five stars.

I was having fun spotting all the nods to classic science fiction stories and other cultural references. The fact there are 12 variants of Cylons reminded me of the Philip K. Dick story Second Variety. The little girl on the biosphere ship waiting for the missiles was a shout out to the infamous anti-Goldwater commercial Daisy. There were a few others.

Next up: Stargate SG-1 Season 1 Disk 1

Pittsburgh Steelers: 21
Seattle Seahawks: 10

I'm sorry, friends in the Pacific Northwest, but y'all lost this game. Pittsburgh was vulnerable early, but mental errors and costly penalties hamstrung your offense. I counted three touchdowns that were negated by penalties or by being out of bounds. And the clock management was horrendous. Superbowl XL wasn't won, it was lost.

Great defense on both sides. The big guns on each team were kept in check, except for a few big plays. The razzle-dazzle reverse/WR pass by Randel El to Hines Ward was a thing of beauty.

Before the game, we watched some of Puppy Bowl II on Animal Planet. At halftime, we caught the Kitten Half-Time show, which was cute beyond all reasonable levels.

Pizza was eaten, and we got face time with Kylie the Wonder Baby when she and her Mommy joined us for dinner.

OK, football is over - bring on the baseball!
