Attention, NL fans!

We have a winner-take all LJ baseball bet going. Place $20 down, and stake out your team for the best record in the League.

Rule 1. No American League teams. Real pitchers bat.

Rule 2. You have to be fan of your choice. Slavering fanatic would be better.

Current bets:

[livejournal.com profile] gridlore - San Francisco Giants

[livejournal.com profile] aurictech - St. Louis Cardinals

[livejournal.com profile] bunyip - Chicago Cubs

Anybody interested, leave a message. If more than one person wants to claim a team, it's up to y'all how you split the loot. Which isn't a problem, since the Giants are taking it all!

GO GIANTS!!

The designated hitter rule has been around since you were in short pants.... After 30 YEARS accept that it's a part of baseball already!!

Besides which it was first suggested by the National League President John Heydler.

December 11, 1928: At the National League meeting, President John Heydler proposes the designated hitter for pitchers to improve and speed up the game. He contends fans are tired of seeing weak-hitting pitchers come to bat. Heydler refers to his idea as "the tenth regular."

P.S. Put my money on the Yankees

Unless I missed something, they are still in the AL. I'm not trying to be pissy, but this is my journal, and my pool, and I specified National League teams.

If you want to start an AL pool, put $20 on the Mariners for Kiri and me.

Gridlore needs a sign and the sign says "That was a joke!"

I still don't have to like it. It encourages overly specialized pitchers who can't do anything but pitch.. I'd love to see Clemens in a situation where he had to face opposing pitchers every few innings.

It's part of baseball in the American League. Not the National.

As much as I like the DH for the AL, I don't want it in the NL. Just doesn't seem right.
I too would love to see that big tub-o-lard Clemens facedown a few fast balls in person.

Billy Wagner once hit a guy in college and caused internal bleeding. That is the kind of fear Clemens needs to face just a few times in his life

Why do you think Nolan Ryan cultivated a reputation for occasional wildness? Two words: plausible deniability. ;-)

Where to send the money?

Put me down for the Astros.
Where do I send the $20?

TV

Hold onto it for now. I'll keep track of who has bet on what teams, and at the end of the season, while figure out what to do with the money.

I find it interesting that three of the four participants to date have picked NL Central teams.

BTW, what happens if nobody picks the NL team with the best record? Do we go with the best record of all teams that were picked by someone, or just call off the whole bet?

[identity profile] bunyip.livejournal.com 2003-02-24 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that best record of those picked is a fine compromise.
