I am so blaming Rachel Maddow for this.

When Jon Huntsman entered the Republican race for the Presidential nomination, Rachel responded by mentioning that she can't hear the word "Huntsman" without thinking of the joke superhero from Freakazoid. She then played the theme music.

It has been stuck in my head for weeks. But it also triggered my gamer instincts. Grabbing the New York City phone book HERO System 5th Edition Revised rulebook, I set out to create the Huntsman.

Just for reference: in the Hero System one game inch equals about 2 meters or about 6.5 feet

So, lets review what we see in the video clip. The huntsman can wrestle a bear with some ease. The rules give an American Black Bear a STR of 23. Give the Huntsman STR 25. This means he can easily lift 800kg/1,763lbs. We see him running down the freeway passing a car (admittedly, it's an Edsel) so he can run at least at 70mph. But since we're not building a speedster, but we want him to be be quick, we'll buy SPD 5, +3" of Running (9" total) 4x Noncombat speed. Speed per turn= (9x4)x5=180"/turn Multiply by 5 to get inches of movement per minute = 900", multiply by 60 to get inches of movement per hour = 54,000" divide by 804.5 to get mph = 67mph. Cost: +3' Running 6 points. 4x Noncombat speed 5 points. Bringing all running to 1/2 END makes the package cost (12 [for the "free" 6' of Running everyone gets]+6+5)x1.5= 29 points. We also see the Huntsman make a mighty leap, so Leaping makes sense. Based on his STR, Hunstman can leap 5" across or 2.5" up. Add 3" of Leaping at 0 END (only for the bonus stuff) for 5 points. This means the mighty Huntsman can leap 52 feet horizontally and 26 feet straight up!

Now let's address how the Huntsman fights. Aside from "punching evil in the eye", he seems to be more about grabbing and throwing his opponents. Which makes the Wrestling package appropriate. We'll add the generic Punch and Boxing's powerful hook maneuver. So we've got a guy who isn't really a brawler, but more about subduing his opponents. But watch out for his right hook, it's a doozy. The Huntsman carries a bow, and given his origins as the beneficiary of elven magic, pretty safe to assume that it's a magical bow with equally magical arrows. A 3d6 Armor-Piercing Ranged Killing Attack (67 points) sounds like a good base to build on. The Huntsman bow is a mighty bow! Nice thing is, since the bow and arrows are magical, we can get into Silver Age Green Arrow territory without resorting to the infamous boxing glove arrow. We'll build it as an Multipower (Magic Bow & Arrows). So, a 67 point reserve. Obvious, Accessible, Durable Focus. The bow is defined as being Very Difficult to replace. The arrows are another matter; the Huntsman keeps a supply on-hand and the elves make him new ones. -1 1/2 Limitation. Also, bows don't do Knockback, so a -1/4 Limitation there. 32 Charges that Cost END is a +1/4 Advantage and a -1/2 Limitation. We'll apply 1/2 END to the whole thing. Add No Range Modifier and 5x Range for +3/4. So the total Advantage modifier is +1 1/4. The total Limitations is -2 1/4. After advantages, the Multipower base costs 151 points. Apply the Limitations 151/(1+2.25)= 46 points. Each slot in the Multipower is fixed, so each slot costs 4 points. This level is good because it means I can get 45 points of active power +1/2 in Advantages on each slot.

I've built the base hunting arrow (3d6 AP RKA), the blunt arrow (9d6 Energy Blast, Physical Attack, Penetrating), the sleep gas arrow (6d6 NND (Life Support or holding your breath) 2" radius, non-selective), the sticky vine arrow (9d6 Entangle, Sticky), and the ghost arrow (9d6 EB, Affects Desolidified). That's good for now; down the road I'd like to add an arrow that sends extra-dimensional critters back to their homes.

Defense. Huntsman is going to be one of those guys who can't bounce bullets off their chests, but can take punches from the best of them. 25% Resistant Damage Reduction in both physical and energy, but not against cold iron based attacks. This will keep him in the fight, but make him more a ranged threat. I also need to address his extraordinary senses.. IR and UV vision along with +4 to PER rolls in all Sense groups.

Skills and Talents. Kept this simple. Combat skill levels with the bow, a couple of levels in hand to hand combat, and strong survival and tracking skills.

End up with a total cost of 350 points. With a base of 200 points, we need some disadvantages!

Let's start with that magic corn. Huntsman needs a small amount monthly or he begins to waste away and lose control over his powers! Getting the corn means visiting the elves, a difficult trip even for him and magic corn isn't exactly common. 15 points. If he doesn't get it, his powers all get an 11- Activation roll and he starts losing -3 to all his characteristics each month! +15 points. Of course, since he only needs it once a month, it's not that bad -25 points So a 5 point disad. A mystical hunter with a connection to a bunch of elves is going to attract attention, so we'll have hunted by DEMON, a large group of evil mystics. 20 points. We'll also give him an as yet undefined arch-enemy who is more powerful than the Huntsman. Psychologically, he's a committed defender of the environment and cannot resist a bad pun (both of which can get him in trouble). He's also considered to be one of the most honorable members of the metahuman community. Amusingly, he's considered an ecological extremist by both people who despise environmentalists and by PeTA, the latter because he hunts his own food. His identity is public, since he's pretty much given up on his old life, which can cause problems for family and old friends. His association with the elves and their magical has left him with an extreme physical aversion to cold iron, touching it injurers him pretty badly. Finally, since the elves provide him with the magic corn and his weapons, he feels a sense of duty to them, and will undertake missions for them at their request.

The Huntsman

Yes, I changed the look.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what I do all day now. I'll post the full character sheet if anyone is interested. Suggestions for an arch enemy would be nice.

Good lord, I had the same thought. I heard 'John Huntsman!' and somewhere in my mind I heard "Huuuuunt!"

For a foe we could start with the Perry-Mantis, & possibly Ms. Tea?

The thing is, everybody I can think of in the GOP field has names or qualifications which could sound like a super. The Mitten, Mama Grizzly, etc.

Have much fun.

Terrifying.

You do know Dos Equis "Most Interesting Man In The World" ads, right? I figure that in a Superhero universe he's a retired cosmic-level hero and everything in the ads is completely true.

Same for the Old Spice Guy. A hero with the power to rearrange matter.

These guys got to make a living somehow!
