Why is it...

that fan-made trailers are so much better than the real ones? For example, say you went to see Thor, and this was the first trailer:

But who would you cast as Louis Wu and Teela Brown? Who would you get to voice Speaker to Animals and Nessus? For Halrloprillalar, I'd want someone trained in dance. She has to be both human and very alien.

It'd be typecasting of a sort, but...Summer Glau.

What does a thing about Ringworld have to do with Thor?

[identity profile] gridlore.livejournal.com 2011-05-25 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
You seriously don't know what a trailer is?

I don't know what a trailer about Ringworld has to do with the Thor movie.

... I just used it as an example of a movie that a trailer for a Ringworld movie might be attached to due to the genre connection.

Okay. I still don't get the connection, but I'll take your word for it, since I figure this is one of those things that's perfectly straightforward to most people but not to me due to my personal peculiarities, and it would be more trouble than it was worth (for both of us) for you to try to explain. It happens. Just ask [livejournal.com profile] kengr. I was essentially absent from the world, mentally, for most of my childhood; things that make perfect sense to others can baffle me, while other things make perfect sense to me but baffle others.

I think when fans make the trailers, there are less people diluting the original idea, so the vision can be made more perfect.

As a coincidence, I just read Ringworld last week - I bought it in an used-book store somewhat by accident. It was a fun book, again, though I seem to have misplaced my Ringworld Engineers.

I'd say Summer Glau is much too young for my mental image of Prill. She'd be more suitable for Teela...

I also have a mental image of Louis Wu but can't think of anybody suitable for that. Orlando Bloom perhaps. Speaker's voice would be Samuel L. Jackson. Nessus is also tough, but I think maybe.. Cameron Diaz. She did Fiona in Shrek, which is why I though of her.

I think Cameron Diaz for Nessus is a great idea, though you'd need to show "him" mimicking other voices to get across the idea that he's not really male or female, and chooses voices to manipulate people. Laying down the law privately to Speaker or to some of the presumably patriachal hominid tribes would be good examples.

I think SLJ's voice is too lyrical: Keith David (cartoon Spawn) for Speaker. I do think SLJ would be a good choice for Nessus' talking-to-Speaker voice.

I would pick an androgynous woman for Prill, like Rosalinda Celentano (Passion of the Christ's Satan). Maybe Sigorney Weaver if CGI or makeup is good enough to give her a superficially youthful appearance to go with more mature mannerisms. Both can still be attractive with a bald head and unconventional female body plan.

Teela's kind of a cipher, I'd think you'd need some really attractive teenage-looking ingenue to give the general audience any sort of empathy for her in the time available - the innocent swept up in a deadly adventure. Summer Glau looks much too creepy for that. It would need to be a Thora Birch or a Jennifer Jason Leigh (original THE HITCHER) or the girl from LAST TANGO IN PARIS.

And for Louis Wu? Eric Balfour, (the guy with the pregnant girlfriend in SKYLINE) he's really good at playing conflicted guys.

That is lovely

For Speaker, a BASS. James Earl Jones, Christopher Lee (Is he still around?), Michael Dorn (Worf), maybe Mr T.
