A shiny new Penny

San Francisco Giants: 4
Philadelphia Phillies: 0

We picked up pitcher Brad Penny off waivers earlier this week (for the non-baseball fiends out there, that means his last team basically said "anyone want him? We don't need him.") Penny had struggled with the Red Sox, piling up an ERA over 8.00. So getting rid of him made sense, right?

Tonight, in his first start in Giants road gray, he pitched 8 innings. His line? 5 hits, 1 walk, 2 K's and no runs. Welcome back to the National League, Mr. Penny!

GO GIANTS!
WE'RE IN THIS THING!!

Awfully nice of the BoTox to cut their pitchers, isn't it?

I mean, John Smoltz (http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=122477), whom the Redbirds picked up for a song (a pro-rated portion of the MLB-minimum salary of $400,000, with the BoTox paying his $5.5 million contract), has only managed 15 strikeouts in 11 innings for the Cardinals.

I guess that Boston's pitching coach isn't doing much to earn his pay....

Some players just do better in one league than the other. We're only paying a pro-rated portion of the league minimum for Penny. However, if, and I do mean if, the Giants make the post season and do well, we might be able to resign him.
