Not as much anymore, but when I was younger I did this all the time. I've always been a loner, you see, and an incurable people watcher. So for me, dinner alone wasn't just food, it was theater. No, I wouldn't eavesdrop, but just watching people, their mannerisms, expressions, actions was endlessly entertaining. I'd sit there, lingering over my food, and concoct elaborate scenarios for the nearby tables or booths. Still do this sort of thing when I find myself with time to kill in a public place.
