Amazon fails its save.

Being an utter geek, I ordered the Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition rulebooks from Amazon.com. Along with getting all three books in a case, it was coming at a steep (nearly half-off) discount.

When I made the order on June 7th, I was given a shipping date of June 23rd. OK, I can get this. Probably a lot of people taking advantage of the offer, a new release, I was willing to deal.

Today, I check my order status, and my books are now shipping on August 1st. No explanation. Five weeks of slippage.

Screw them, I canceled the order. We'll go down to our local bookstore in a bit and spend a bit more to get the books in the house.

I'm getting tired of Amazon's cavalier attitude towards shipping.

It's got nothing to do with their attitude, and everything to do with their supply.

I preordered, and was given a ship date of launch day. That slipped to two weeks later, with a note that there was a supply issue (it wasn't just that, it was that their orders database apparently took a HUGE hit on PS3/MGS4 launch day). As it happens, my books shipped three days after they were originally supposed to. They had so many pre-orders that they couldn't fulfill all of their initial shipping orders, so they're putting up later ship dates as a buffer. Everyone I know who preordered the three-pack got their books within a week of the original ship date.

I would like it if they said openly "We have so much demand for this, it's hard to keep it in stock or guarantee shipping it on time," but that's sales for you.

Can we call this a critical fumble on Amazon's part?

Same happened to me. Not much I can do about it though - I don't think any local stores have got it yet either. And there's nowhere else I can order from that is likely to deliver soon.

I also got my order in just before Amazon stopped non-courier shipping to South Africa. *sigh*

At least I have the PDF files, so I can read up on the rules before the books arrive.

suprisingly enough I heard that the books sold out and wne to a second printing before they even reached their release date. Personally I supported my friendly local game store and bought the books in person for $100 and got three back issues of Dragon magazine as a bonus instead of preordering from Amazon. I figure it's worth an extra $45 to have a place to go and play games instead of having people come over to my house.
