Baycon Schedule

OK, here we go!

Along with co-hosting the Traveller 30th Anniversary Party with [livejournal.com profile] kshandra, [livejournal.com profile] aurictech, and [livejournal.com profile] ataniell93, I have seven panels.

Friday, May 25th

1900 Embarcadero Sports in SF Doug Berry, Kathryn Daugherty (M), Scott Sigler, Norman Sperling

Humans make the best quarterbacks. Sclorno make the best wide receivers, since they can jump 25 feet in the air. Klingons make the best rugby players. How do authors translate sporting events into SciFi? Does it work better to use existing sports (football, baseball, etc) or create something new (Quidditch, Pareese Squares)?

Saturday, May 26th

1300 Powell The Ultimate Conspiracy Theory Doug Berry (M), Tom Dilligan, Richard Lupoff

Mysteries of Fnord revealed. Panelists will discuss the ingredients needed for the ultimate conspiracy theory as they relate to the works of the late great Robert Anton Wilson and his Illuminati novels.

1430 Embarcadero World Creation for Gamers Doug Berry, Jennifer Brozek, Caitlin Kittridge, Jesse Mundis (M), Jason Schachat

How does world design differ between written, video and game platforms?

2130 Golden Gate MatchGame SF Doug Berry, Esther Friesner, Tom Galloway, Christopher Garcia, Leigh Ann Hildebrand, Kevin Standlee (M), Martin Young

Match Game! Get ready to match the stars in this science fiction-themed version of the classic 1970s game show. Contestants vie to guess how our panel will answer fill-in-the-blank questions like "Captain Kirk has the biggest ___ in Starfleet!" There will be prizes for all contestants. Sign up at the Info Desk to be a contestant and check the newsletter for more information. Plan to meet at the Info Desk at 5pm for a short contestant briefing. (Please note, timing is approximate, depending on how long the Masquerade contestants take.)

Sunday, May 27th

1000 Golden Gate Fun Ways To Kill Your Character Doug Berry, Jennifer Brozek, Sarah Goodman, Ed Green (M), Frank Lurz, Misty Marshall,

A gamer/goth, anthropologist, pharmacologist, swordmaster, a Ranger and fan discuss all of the creative ways you can kill off your characters. It's not all blood and guts!

1300 Lombard Evolution of Doctor Who Cathy Beckstead, Doug Berry, Tim Crowley, Christian McGuire (M),

In the more than 40 years since the series started, the Doctor has regenerated 8 times, had a host of companions (including K9) and visited time and space as no one else has. How have we gotten to the current series, and where will we go from here?

Monday, May 28th

1300 Embarcadero Characters Who Could Rule the World Doug Berry, Wanda Kurtcu (M), Richard Lupoff, Jesse Mundis, Lori Ann White

Voldemort for President. Vorkosigan for King. What characteristics are helpful for a leadership position? Sometimes you need The Terminator, sometimes you need Indiana Jones, and sometimes you need Jean-Luc Picard. Our panelists discuss various characters and the pros and cons of their fictional candidacy.

I think I'll be pretty busy...

Feel at the back of your head, right where your neck meets the curve of your skull. There's a small notch or soft area there. Under that thin tissue, is the thinnest bone in the human body. Behind that, you find the point where the spinal cord joins with the brain.

Your target is a sentry. Get behind him, and with your weak hand grab over the mouth and pull violently back. At the same time, using a combat knife (one with a point) stab into this weak spot. Twist the knife back and forth once or twice. Lower victim to the ground.

What you have just done is cut off all communication between the brain and the body. No signals, autonomous or volutary can pass down. He might stay conscious for a few seconds on the oxygen in the brain, but there is no way on Earth he can move, scream, or do anything. You have flicked his light switch to off.

In a pinch, and metal or hardwood tool with a point can do the job.

As I've taught my coworkers, there is but One Law:

"Do not irritate Doug. Because when Doug gets irritated, people die."

My version is: "Do not piss off the crazy Russian with a knife."

Damn. I'd love to be there for your Friday night panel, but I'm not rolling into town until Saturday.

Ah well, c'est la vie, I s'pose. :)

Hopefully, I'll find a moment to say hi. :)

Which one are you? Gamer I can see, but *goth*?

[identity profile] sylvan.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, gamer/goth is my friend Jenn. I'd put my money on Ranger.
