A really sick note.

I've been fighting a cold all week. Today, I had to go in on barely three hours sleep. Deep chest cold, one that causes machine gun coughing fits. Had one of those occur driving out of Blackhawk. So bad, that it triggered a gag reflex.

I made it to a sewer grate. Barely. Anyway, I'm there purging my system of what little I've eaten in the last day plus a lot of phlegm. Finally the spasms stop and I'm trying to catch my breath. Near me is an old rich biddy who watched this whole display. What does she say to me?

A. "Are you alright? Do you need help?"

or

B. "This is a private community. I'm going to call security."

I loathe people.

Had I not been seriously worried about my chances of getting back to the shop safely, I might have spared her a few words. What I did was raise my hand, palm in with fingers spread, and told her that one of these fingers was for her.

Nasty old bat. Does being a rich bitch entitle you to be an inconsiderate c word???

Evidently. I ran into this all the time at SuperShuttle. When I'd make a pick up in a poorer area, like the lower Mission or Bayview-Hunters Point, people were ready, polite, and generally were good at tipping. Do a pick up in a rich area like Pacific Heights, and you were lucky to get two words out of the customer and your odds of being tipped went down.
