Friday Fiver could go all the wayyyy!!!!

1. American football: good times or couldn't care less? Great time!

2. Do you have a favorite sports team? Baseball: San Francisco Giants. Football: San Francisco 49ers (NFL) San Jose Sabercats (Arena League) Hockey: San Jose Sharks.

3. What's your favorite junk food? Pizza

4. Are football players paid too much? Considering the price they pay (average career is a bit under three years, and 80% of all NFL veterans suffer some form ogf lasting physical or mental disability) no. Also, the market determines the value of a commodity. The minimum salary for a rookie is $260,000/year. For a job that pretty much guarantees a lifetime of pain, it doesn't seem unreasonable.

5. Who do you think will win this year's Superbowl? I think the Colts have too many weapons. I predict Colts 27, Bears 21.

You know, that's the single best explanation for "why pay them so damn much" I've ever seen.

The Chronicle had an fascinating and frightening article about the damage done to the players on the great Niner teams of the 80s. Dwight Clark couldn't re-enact The Catch if he wanted to - he can't raise his arms above his shoulders. Steve Young can't remember hoisting the Lombardi trophy. The sheer number of hip and knee replacements is terrifying.

So yeah, they're welcome to the money and the glory. I just hope the recognize the price they'll pay later.
