They've fixed it now..

But earlier today the White House page on President Lame Duck's trip to Asia was using this flag for Vietnam:



That flag was last used for an existing government on 30 April 1975. Then the PAVN pulled it down and raised the flag of the North.

Is it too much to ask that someone in the White House know enough to check the CIA World Factbook entry on the nation?

Remembed, these are the folks who didn't expect any serious problems in Iraq once Saddam was deposed.

Well, that would require using their brains. But remember Bush and most of his cronies were never in Vietnam (having avoided the draft or even serving in his National Guard unit), so it is not unexpected.

This is a political etiquette question of no small significance. If one is a Republican and desires to not piss off the Vietnamese expat community, this is the flag to use -- for the exiles. Of course, the sovereign nation of modern Vietnam does not cast votes in Orange County.
