As a side-note, the basic back-story for MAR Barker's 'Swords and Glory' rpg [aka = 'Tekumel' or originally, 'Empire of the Petal Throne'] has that type of weird science.
At the very START of it all, the universe for Tekumel had an unknown alien race attack using weird science shove the star & solar system for Tekumel into its own event horizon, making it a pocket universe, comprised of only the stellar primary, planets and a few moons.
[Millenia pass, civilization rebuilds & the game setting begins.] But it did start out as part of a stellar empire.
... so when I ran a campaign for it, to intro the PCs, I had them -come- from that original stellar empire - and [just for fun] made that empire the alternate universe from ST's 'Mirror Mirror'. It was a great game. ^_^
