I'm on jury duty this week, which means checking the website each night to see if I've drawn the short straw. I'm one of those sad people who actually accepts that jury duty is part of being a citizen, and doesn't automatically try to get out of it.

Doesn't mean I have to like the idea of giving up time at work for the princely sum of $15/day.

Check in advance; some courts require a copy of a written policy. (Ricoh, for example, used to just pay without setting an explicit limit; the new employee handbook sets the limit at two weeks, which gets you off the hook for the high-profile horrors but still lets you serve on most reasonable cases.
