gridlore: Doug looking off camera with a grin (Me - Line)

I have seen the GURPS movie...

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow quite simply rocks. It exploits every cliffhanger genre, has some really funny moments, and the plot? Nice and simple.. If the insidious Dr. Totenkopf isn't stopped, the world will be destroyed.

So, what did we get?

Zeppelins, lost worlds, mystery plots, giant robots attacking New York, a highly modified P-40 Warhawk, Shangri-la, a Godzilla reference, Science!, romance, close calls, heart-stopping action, and the Royal Navy's Mobile Recon Base (aka the helicarrier.)

The all-CGI sets were just hokey enough to give the right feel to the film. It feels like it's set in some alternate late-30s.

I have one complaint. Characters constantly refer to World War I. Since the film seems to be set in a world where there are no Nazis, and thus no WWII, the proper term would have been The Great War.

I second that complaint. No Nazis whatsoever, not even a hint of them. But other than that, I too agree that the film rocked.

I was only recently disabused of the notion that Franky was going to be the Nazi Villain. Certainly "Totenkopf" and her outfit suggested something along those lines. Plus as we all well, know British accents apply to anyone from anywhere in Europe in the movies.

If you want to wiggle out of the "World War I" gaffe, what's the actual time period of the movie. The 1930s, or the modern day as the 1930's pictured it? If the latter there may have been another World War, but one different from our own.

Must go see...but I promised I would take my nieces next Saturday (Paul starts gnawing the corner of his desk).

That would be...

... a Castle Falkenstein movie, or another Steampunk movie; or a variant Feng Shui movie. Everyone knows that GURPS can't handle heroic action. :D

I am looking forward to seeing this one as soon as I can arrange it.

In addition to the WWI reference, there are several other gratuitous anachronisms, almost certainly deliberate.

Bloody fantastic!

I caught the flick yesterday. I'm up for a second run! I am about 3000 miles from Doug though, so alternate plans will have to be made. Unless Paul's got that transdimensional portal set up yet...
