The sound of gunfire off in the distance

I'm getting used to it now.

The annual illegal fireworks extravaganza has begun here in the Almaden Valley. Let me describe how it sounds to me.

Off to the west, there is intermittent rifle fire - battle rifle caliber, maybe AK-47s. Beyond that, a machinegun is firing in suppressive mode; with long bursts that will burn out his barrel.

To the east, quite nearby, a sniper is plying his trade. His shots come in ones and twos, but since he's firing something heavy, they are quite noticeable... wait, sounds like his targets have located him and are returning fire.

Whoops, somebody called in mortar fire, or tripped a big IED.

The firefight out west reached a crescendo and then dropped off. A few final shots. Probably wounded losers not smart enough to surrender.

This is how my brain works in processing sounds.

20 points to the first person to ID where I stole the subject from...

Talking Heads, "Life During Wartime".

How about ID'ing, "I hear the sound of gunfire at the prison gate..."?

I'm sorry that's what it sounds like to your ears but that was truly amazing to read. Thank you.

Reminds me of Washington Heights when the Yankees won the World Series back when I was in college. Or a very unfortunate evening when I was living in Jerusalem. Take your pick...

Ah, memories. :-p

they were talking about something like this on the news today. how people see things when they hear other things. like this one lady saw beautiful colours dancing in front of her when she heard a piece of music. it's fascinating to me how your brain works. (that sounds odd huh?)

hmmmm i think i'll hear fireworks differently now

too late for points

but then again, i'm just another talking tread head. %-) life in the part of greater south central where i spent the 60's to mid 90's was even better. on holidays it looked and sounded like the Malone Complex or a CALFEX. even day to day was interesting, and i remember listening to "fire, counter fire" some nights and then 5-10 mikes later, the chopper and sirens. shades of a guerrilla war. %-) redc1c4, fugitive from the law of averages
