At that consumption rate, I'd have thought it amazing they could even find their way to open sea, let alone actually GET anywhere.

How many of those men still had livers?

An amusing tidbit from the Puzzle Pirates game: Every ship needs to sail with an onboard supply of rum. The rum is consumed while the ship is under way. Once the rum is gone, messages begin to inform everyone that "the crew is grumbling," and everyone's efficiency at shipboard tasks starts declining.

In other words, Puzzle Pirates characters are more effective when drunk.

I seem to recall at least one classic "Murphy's Rules" to that effect as well.

And as another PP player, I can confirm that rum serves as "fuel" for ships there. It even comes in three grades: swill, grog, and fine rum.

I've been aboard a ship that managed to run out of both rum AND cannon balls.... That was not a fun pillage run.
