Remember when we accepted challenges?

Today is the 43rd anniversary of John F. Kennedy challenging the American people to send a man to the Moon.

Hear his own words.

I think of space now as North America between the Rio Grande and the St. Lawrence was during the 16th century. Everyone knew it was there, and there was some promise to it, but the technology wasn't quite there yet. Most people don't realize that it took more than 100 years after Columbus before the start of permanent settlement.

Gagarin and Armstrong were Columbus. In the absence of space Aztecs or space beaver pelts, we now wait until it's time for the Virginia colony and New England.
