Lightsabers and laser/plasma swords are practically in the public domain by now. Heck, in one of his previous roles (before he was Born Again, apparently), Willie Aames' character (Hank the Ranger) carried a light-bow. It was pretty cool; of course they couldn't have him actually KILL anyone with it, so it did lots of other tricks instead.
