Well, that was amusing...
Yesterday, I was scheduled to work from 1200 - 1700.
I ended up working 1000 - 1900. Why?
A bunch of seasonal hires just quit. Out of the blue. With whiny reasons like "it's too far to drive" (you didn't notice this when you dropped off your application?) or "it's too hard" (running a cash register that's smarter than most of us? What's so hard about scanning/reading skus and telling people to slide their cards?)
So yesterday they suddenly had one cashier, and no floor people at opening. My boss calls me in at 1000, and we get busy. I have to hustle to grab chairs for people, do my own price checks, etc. Long lines, angry people, etc. The Silent One comes in about 1100 (early as well) and we finally get at least one person to cover the floor. I ask the boss if she needs me to work a full shift, and she thanks me for the offer. Hell, I could use the money!
But I don't get it. We are still in a lousy economy here.. and Cost Plus is a good-paying job. Why would people turn down the chance to get any work, even seasonal, is beyond me. And to get hired and then just quit? Bloody stupid. Left the rest of us in the lurch. I was half-expecting to get a call this morning to come in today. As it is, I'm covering a full shift tomorrow (The Cheerleader's b-day is today, so she wanted to have Friday off to recover) and another five hours Saturday.
Help's my paycheck and makes me look better in management's eyes.

It never occurs to them that quitting a job will make it harder to get another. Nor that they may have trouble getting another.
