Oh microwave, oh microwave . . .
Our microwave over decided to join in the holiday festivities by sparking madly and making happy popping noises when in use. Far from being excited by our small appliance's attempts at Christmas cheer, it was exiled to the back of my truck, pending research on where I can recycle it.
As we use the microwave a great deal, it was decided that an immediate trip to Target was in order. Luckily for us, our local store is literally just down the street. So we stagger to wakefulness, pull on clothes, and step out into the howling cold of a California winter.
All of you reading this in places that experience frozen water falling from the sky can stop laughing. When you're used to temperatures in the mid-70s Fahrenheit, 45 degrees is cold. It's a matter of what you are accustomed to dealing with.
But anyway, we hop in the truck, swing by the Scary Post Office to mail out the stuff that has been bought from the Great Sale (still a lot of good stuff available!) and then on to Target! For December 23rd, the lot and the store were remarkably sane. We found a disabled parking spot fairly easily, and I snagged a cart from a shopper who didn't need it anymore. Then I waited for Kirsten to get her stuff from the in-store Starbucks.
And waited. Because the outlet only had two workers, it was taking some time for Kiri to get her Sous Vide Egg Bite and Venti Lightly Sweet Non-fat Chai. I spent the time watching the adorable kids and some good dogs. But eventually, the staff had her order, and we ambled over to the kitchen area.
I love shopping at Target because while they don't have the widest selection, what they have is good quality at very good prices. After a quick scan of the shelves, we found a Sunbeam 0.9 cubic foot, 900-watt microwave that was even on sale. Giddy with our success, we kept looking around. Because you never know what you'll find.
Now I must confess our dark secret. We hated our toaster. With a passion. It ignored whatever way you twisted the setting dial and gave you toast the way it wanted you to have it. It sulked at toasting English muffins, barely warming them before sulking at you. So when we spotted a Sunbeam 4-slice toaster that was also on sale, we threw caution and paycheck to the wind and added it to our cart.
There was no stopping us. I found some hanging file folders that I can use for SSA/Medicaid paperwork; as we already have the file cabinet sitting here to hold them. We found a blackboard message center that we're taking to Burning Man to mount on the exterior of the Free Trader Beowulf. The idea is people can leave us messages if they come to visit and we're out.
There were a couple more small things, a cover for the truck's steering wheel, a small kitchen tool on clearance, but most we took the opportunity to get a good walk in and watch the little kids. And oh dear Halford, there were so many little kids! I love other people's cute kids because I just get to watch them be cute and don't have to deal with them when they become little monsters.
But we saw excited school-age kids in the "48 hours to Christmas" stage of glee, toddlers being adorable, including one little boy who decided to stop right where he was and go no further. Mom and aunt (we assumed) just kept going while say "Bye!" to the little one. Works every time. As we passed the two ladies there was a cry of horror from the little boy and the sound of little feet pounding the floor. I had to laugh.
We got out for a lot less than I was expecting, given the fact that we were purchasing important stuff. But again, Target is a great place to find good bargains. We made it home, hauled in all our loot, and set everything up. I had to rearrange things in our tiny kitchen space to fit the new toaster in, but it works. Later we'll inaugurate the new microwave. Hopefully, without celebratory sparks.
As we were doing all this I told Kirsten that we need to use all the kitchen gadgets. We have a toaster oven, a bread maker, and a huge KitchenAid mixer that never get used. I'd like to see us get more use out of those in the new year. Because otherwise, they are just taking up space.
